Actor Morgan Freeman explains why he dislikes both Black History Month and the term “African American.”

In a Sunday Times interview published over the weekend, the Oscar winner stated, “Black History Month is an insult. You’re going to relegate my history to a month?”

Freeman went on, “Also ‘African American’ is an insult. I don’t subscribe to that title. Black people have had different titles all the way back to the n-word and I do not know how these things get such a grip, but everyone uses ‘African American.’”

He added, “What does it really mean? Most Black people in this part of the world are mongrels. And you say Africa as if it’s a country when it’s a continent, like Europe.”

In order to make his point more clear, Freeman pointed out that “people talk about Irish Americans or Italian Americans, not Euro Americans.”

Morgan Freeman Says Black History Month Is ‘An Insult, But Why?

The same argument was made by Freeman, who co-stars with Florence Pugh in the recently-released film A Good Person, almost two decades ago (in 2005) when he called the yearly commemoration of Black History Month in the United States each February “ridiculous.”

“You’re going to relegate my history to a month? What do you do with yours? Which month is White History Month?” the Glory trouper asked Mike Wallace in a “60 Minutes” interview.

Wallace identified himself as Jewish, prompting Freeman to inquire about Jewish History Month. Wallace turned away the notion.

“Oh, why not? Why not? You don’t want one? I don’t either. I don’t want a Black History Month. Black history is American history,” answered Freeman.

Wallace asked the icon, “How are we going to get rid of racism?”

To which Freeman responded, “Stop talking about it. I’m going to stop calling you a white man, and I’m going to ask you to stop calling me a Black man.”
