Apparently not wanting to eclipse 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne has decided to push the release of Dedication 4 back. Apparently not afraid to eclipse 2 Chainz on one track, Weezy released a cut from the project, his “No Lie Freestyle,” to tide everyone over.

There are a few things to be excited about here, mainly the fact that, although this is still a long way from the fire breathing Wayne of old (“Cannon,” “A Milli”) this is about as close spiritually as he has been in a long time. The aggression is there, to be sure, but this is more barracuda than bull shark.

“No Lie Freestyle” is something like watching Usain Bolt on the practice track. You can see the speed and power in his frame, you can feel it, that notion that at any second he can transcend himself and most all others, operating on his own plane, if only he wants to. “No Lie” carries that same feeling, the idea that the Wayne of old, delirious, hilarious, cutting, could be in the very next bar, until the song is over and he never shows. For every could-have-been esoteric drug reference—banana peel would have been more fun to find out on our own, or, if all else fails, on Rap Genius—there is a semblance of witty Wayne (My number one F-A-N/You know what that mean, fuck all night”) poking through, and the end result is something promising but a tad disappointing at the same time.

If, however, the rest of Dedication 4 tacks in the same direction, the extra days spent dry may be worth the wait.
