The Divorce is the film version of the play written by Don B. Welch. With an all-star cast featuring Dawnn Lewis, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Tatyana Ali and Angell Conwell, the film looks at relationships from the perspective of middle aged women. The focus is a divorce, or more so the celebration of divorce for Dawnn’s character, Yolanda Massey. The writer also explores relationships between friends, mothers and daughters and infidelity in the 115 minute production.
There’s a Waiting To Exhale feel here, though Yolanda has already found the silver lining. Her divorce has been processed and now after months of depression she is ready to enjoy life after marriage. She’s already picked up a new boy toy, but this celebration is the next step in her moving forward. She invites a group of her dearest friends to partake in her celebration and there you meet a cast of women filled with the nuances of many groups of friends. As guests arrive they provide different forms of entertainment as the women ‘pre-game’ for what’s supposed to end up as a night at the club. It turns out to be quite the eventful night!
This would be a great ladies night film and its definitely a conversation starter. The goal is to have an adult dialogue about women’s issues, here that happens successfully and with the minimum male bashing that’s we’ve been accustomed to. Viewers will enjoy every minute of it.
