Chrisette Michele Responds To Criticism Over Donald Trump Inauguration Performance News

Chrisette Michele took nearly a full day before she decided to make any public comments in response to the reports that she would be performing at the Donald Trump inauguration. While Essence Magazine was able to confirm the report through her people there was no sign of the singer yesterday as fans, supporters and Black Internet activists alike slammed her for making a decision to do what artists do, perform. This morning a response came, by way of a Chrisette Michele open letter revealed via her Instagram and a post on her RichHipster blog. See how Chrisette Michele responds in the full letter below.

In the short blog post Chrisette talks about Black History and speaks of “peaceful & progressive conversation”.  Chrisette also invokes the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr., quoting him before ending by saying “I am here, representing you, because this is what matters.”

Chrisette ends the short letter with the honest hashtag #NoPoliticalGenius.  The letter may not be enough to quiet the incredible rush to judgement and slander she’s faced on social media, but it offers up the explanation that so many people were begging for.

“My heart is broken for our country, for the hopes of our children, for the fights of those who came before us.

I cry at the thought that Black History, American History might be in vain.

This country has had great moments. God has shined His light upon us.

Today, I hope that Great Moments begin in peaceful & progressive conversation. I am willing to be a bridge. I don’t mind “These Stones”, if they allow me to be a voice for the voiceless.

I am here.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Our lives begin to end, the day we become silent about what matters,”.

I am here, representing you, because this is what matters.”
