After Pop Smoke was murdered back in February, his record label vowed that they would put together a Pop Smoke posthumous album.  The goal was to release something that he and his family would be proud of, from the unreleased music that he was working on.  They got 50 Cent to come on board as an executive producer, along with Rico Beats and label head Steven Victor and the got to work putting together what is now, Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon.

The album release for the project was delayed a bit while the protests and the Black Lives Matter movement was in full swing, but the project was given a new release date of July 3rd.  Still in the days before the album release, the conversation was more about the album cover than it was about the music.  Designed by Virgil Abloh, the cover art was panned as lazy and distasteful.  A change.org petition garnered over 21,000 signatures of fans requesting a redesign.  The label eventually cased to the pressure and the new artwork was unveiled with the album release.

Known for a leader in the new wave of New York drill music, Pop Smoke was finding success in music as last year was ending and this year was taking off.  His first two EPs were garnering lots of attention and it seemed like he was taking the reigns of the New York Hip-Hop scene before he was tragically taken from his family and fans.  The Pop Smoke posthumous album, Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon is likely the final opus from the rapper.

The Pop Smoke posthumous album was lead by the single, “Make It Rain” featuring locked up emcee Rowdy Rebel.  A video with previously unreleased footage of the rapper was released in June.

A video was also created for “Got It On Me,” and released on the same day as the album.
