Does your home or office have a weak Wifi signal?

Dealing with a  slow internet connection can be extremely annoying. Luckily, there are things you can do to improve your Wifi signal strength without canceling your internet service provider.

Read on to discover how to improve your Wifi signal strength.

  1. Choose the Right Router Placement

Where you place your router can have a major effect on the strength of your Wifi signal.

While many people think it’s logical to place their router inside of a cabinet so it’s out of the way and not an eyesore, this isn’t always the best location. Rather than stuffing your router in a corner of your home, you want it to be in the middle of your house.

This way, the signal can reach all corners of your home. Or, if there’s a room in your home where you tend to use the Wifi the most (ie, an office or a gaming room), then it’s a good idea to place the router in that room.

Also, make sure that there aren’t any obstructions, such as doors or books, right in front of the router. If you can, elevate your router by placing it on a desk or mounting it to the wall.

  1. Make Sure Your Router is Updated

Making sure your router is as up to date as possible will also help improve the speed of your Wifi.

To check if your router is running the latest firmware, launch your web browser and connect to your router’s network. Then, enter the IP address of your router into your browser. (Check the sticker on your router to find the IP address.)

Once you’ve entered the address, select either Router Update or Firmware Update. Then, allow your router to find and install the latest firmware.

  1. Get a Better Antenna

The reason for your poor Wifi signal may be because of your antenna.

Most routers come with default antennas, which are often small and weak. Not only is this a move on the manufacturer’s part to save money, but powerful antennas can also be a huge eyesore.

While antennas that come with routers are typically just a few inches tall, powerful routers can be 10 inches to 15 inches, sometimes even larger. However, even though these large antennas are an eyesore, they can make a huge difference when it comes to improving the strength of your Wifi signal, so they’re well worth the investment.

  1. Make Sure No One is Stealing Your Wifi

If you don’t want greedy neighbors leeching off your Wifi and slowing down the signal, then you need to make sure that your Wifi is encrypted and password protected.

You also need to make sure that the password you choose is strong. Here’s how to create a strong password

  • Use a combination of both uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as numbers and symbols
  • Avoid common passwords like qwerty and 12345
  • Make sure your password is at least 8 characters long
  • Don’t include personal info in your password, like pet names, your kids’ names, or significant dates
  • Use a password manager to remember your password rather than writing it down

Use these tips, and it’ll be impossible for nosy neighbors to break into your network.
