A Detroit Post Office Honors Legendary Songstress Aretha Franklin
If “put some respect on my name” was a person, it would have definitely been the legendary Ms. Aretha Franklin.
On Monday, October 4, 2021, the USPS Fox Creek Station in Detroit, Michigan acquired a new name in honor of the Queen of Soul, and family, friends, and city officials were all in attendance to celebrate the historic occasion.
“Her legacy lives on in her music, in her family. But we have added to that list of her legacy: A post office with her name on it,” U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence bragged of her late friend at the dedication ceremony, according to The Associated Press.
After years of serving as a postal service worker, Lawrence, who’s also a Michigan Democrat, introduced the bill to change the office’s name in Congress, and it was signed by Trump in January.
The Aretha Franklin Post Office Building is ironically located five miles east of downtown Detroit, near an amphitheater on the Detroit River that is also named after the icon.
Known for award-winning hits like “Respect,” “Ain’t No Way,” “Chain of Fools,” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” among an incredible tracklist of others, Franklin lost her lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer at her Motor City home in 2018. She was 76.
