There are two kinds of people: those who enjoy making friends with their neighbors, and those who prefer to keep to themselves. Even if you are the latter, you should still make an effort to get to know your neighbors a bit better.

After all, it’s important to know the people in your area. Whether you’re new to an area or you’ve been living there for a few years, we’re going to share some helpful tips that can help you get to know your neighbors better.

Look at their social media

Many neighbors have friended each other on social media as a common courtesy, but the truth is that social media can tell you a lot about your neighbors.

It will be able to tell you what their job is, what their interests are, and so much more. We’re not saying you should spend hours analyzing your neighbors’ social media, but a simple scroll will give you some valuable information that you can use in your next conversation.

If you are struggling to find their social media, Instant Checkmate may be able to help. Having your neighbors on social media can also improve safety in your neighborhood. If, for example, you see that they are away on holiday, you can keep an eye on their house and vice versa.

Invite them over

Of course, you shouldn’t necessarily invite your neighbors over to your house the first time you talk to them, but if you’ve exchanged small talk a few times, you can extend an invitation.

While you may feel the urge to go all out to impress your neighbors, something simple like a barbeque or an afternoon tea will probably be a better option. This way, you can have some one-on-one conversations and really get to know them better.

Have a housewarming

If you’re new to a neighborhood, it can be hard to get to know your neighbors. An easy solution is to host a housewarming party.

That way, you get to meet a lot of your neighbors at once. A relaxed and friendly environment will also make it easier to chat with your neighbors. Whether you ask for gifts at a housewarming or not is up to you, but since you likely won’t know your neighbors very well yet, we suggest you skip it, as they may be offended. Join community groups

There are various social media groups in nearly any community, so it’s a good idea to join at least one. Not only will this allow you to get to know your neighbors better, but it will also help you stay up to date on any relevant information.

Have a look on Facebook to see if there are any groups. There may also be a WhatsApp group. If you can’t find anything, ask around and talk to your neighbors to see if they could perhaps add you to a group. Alternatively, you can just start one of your own.

Get involved in community activities

Many communities have various activities that are specifically aimed towards getting to know the people in the area better. While you may have better ways that you want to spend your free time, it can’t hurt to try it.

Maybe the people in your area go on a walk every weekend or volunteer at a shelter. These are all opportunities for you to meet like-minded people in your area.

If there aren’t any community activities, why not start some? A good idea is to host a neighborhood book club. If you’re having some struggles when it comes to picking a book for the book club, this post might help.

Talk to them

It may sound a bit obvious, but the best way to get to know your neighbors is to simply strike up a conversation with them. Next time you both walk past each other, instead of just smiling, ask them how their day is going.

Talking to people can be very anxiety-inducing for some people, but it truly is the fastest and easiest way to get to know your neighbor. If the conversation doesn’t go well, at least you know you tried.

Welcome new neighbors

If someone new moves into the house next to you, or a few houses down the street, it will likely mean the world to them if you give them a warm welcome.

Give them some time to settle in, and then pop over to their house to welcome them and maybe exchange contact details. If you want to go the extra mile, take a dinner or some baked goods along with you. These donuts with pomegranate caramel will certainly impress them and make them feel welcome!

Help them

No matter how private we try to keep our lives, our neighbors will always know a little bit of what’s happening in our lives. So, next time you spot a neighbor struggling to carry something from their car, offer to help them.

By helping your neighbor with something, you are getting to know them in a natural way, without having to force anything. You likely won’t become best friends with your neighbor (although who knows), but it’s nice to help them out when you can.

You never know, they may just offer to help you out in return. You can also offer to water their plants or feed their pets when they go away.

In conclusion

While you shouldn’t be incredibly close with all your neighbors, it is a good idea to get to know them a bit better. You never know when you will need a neighbor’s help.

However, actually taking steps to get to know them can be intimidating for many people, especially if they are new to a neighborhood and feel out of place. But just remember that your neighbors are only people, just like you, so talking to them shouldn’t be scary. In fact, it can offer many benefits for you and them.
