5 Reasons Your Self-esteem Is Low

Self-esteem is “confidence in one’s worth or abilities.” When it’s low, it means you don’t see yourself as worthy or capable. You often shortchange and don’t give yourself credit where it’s due. Low self-esteem can have profound effects on every area of your life. It can impact your mental and physical health, work performance, and relationships. There are many reasons why someone might have low self-esteem. Here are five common causes:

 Self-esteem

Low Self-confidence

If you don’t believe in yourself, it’s hard to expect others to. Low self-confidence can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you think you’re not good enough, you’re likely to act in ways that confirm this belief. For example, you might not apply for that job you want because you don’t think you could get it.

Additionally, you might not put your hand up in class even when you know the answer because you’re afraid of being wrong. The good news is you can change the way you think and feel about yourself.

Start by building up your confidence little by little. Creating your belief system is one way of boosting your confidence. Check out Wicca Academy for help doing this.

Perfectionism

If you’re constantly setting unrealistic standards for yourself, it’s no wonder you don’t feel good about yourself. Perfectionism is a major cause of low self-esteem as it makes you feel like you’re never good enough. No matter how hard you try, you can never reach an unattainable goal. It leads to feelings of frustration, inadequacy, and discouragement. To avoid this, set realistic standards for yourself and learn to accept mistakes as part of life.

Negative Self-talk

How you talk to yourself can either build you up or tear you down. If you’re constantly putting yourself down, it’s no wonder you have low self-esteem. Negative self-talk can become a habit and be hard to break. Catch yourself when you’re doing it, and reframe your thoughts in a more positive light. For instance, instead of thinking, “I’m such a loser,” tell yourself, “I’m doing the best I can.”

Comparing Yourself to Others

It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others, especially with the constant bombardment of social media. It makes you feel like you’re not good enough and that everyone else’s life is perfect. Remember that people only share the highlights of their life on social media. You don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.

Rather than comparing yourself to others, focus on being the best you can be. Set attainable goals, and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small. Keep improving your life little by little, and don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. Remember, you’re a unique individual.

A Traumatic Event

If you’ve experienced a traumatic event, it can have a lasting impact on your self-esteem. Trauma includes anything from abuse to natural disasters. It can leave you feeling scared, alone, and unworthy.

It’s a challenge to see yourself in a positive light after going through something so difficult. Seek professional help fast. A therapist can help you work through the trauma and rebuild your self-esteem.

You’re Worthy No Matter the Challenges

If you identify with these reasons, know that you are not alone. Millions of people struggle with low self-esteem. The good news is that you can improve your self-esteem with some help and intentional effort. Give yourself some credit and remember that you are worthy, no matter what.
