Gambling responsively is not just about spending more than you wanted to on gambling, although it is important to set budgets for your sessions, weeks, or months. It is also about the amount of time spent gambling, time spent thinking or worrying about gambling, and also compulsivity towards gambling. If any of these factors are somewhat significant then you are not gambling responsibly.

It’s important to take a look at the frequency of your gambling for this very reason. Maybe once a week is okay for you. Maybe it’s once a month. If you’re finding yourself gambling daily or a few times a week then you may want to start taking a look at what is going on and start tracking your time spent to see if it has become, or is becoming, an issue.
4. Set a model of behavior to be proud of
Whether it’s your friends or your family, you are an influence on other people, whether you like it or not. Think about what gambling behaviors you might be worried about if you saw them reflected in your loved ones. Even if you don’t have an addiction, how would it feel if you accidentally brought out that behavior in someone you know, simply by being permissive in your own gambling experiences? If you have plenty of cash to spare so can throw down hundreds at the casino, ensure that you’re not out with your friend who’s barely scraping by and also has a compulsive nature already. Look out for the people around you by being responsible both for yourself – and for your loved ones.
5. You owe it to your family
Now we left this one until last because gambling is about you, but you also have a responsibility to your family as well. Your partner if you have one, and kids, are deserving of the best of you. If you are not gambling responsibly, this may interfere with your primary relationships in life. If you are spending too much time gambling at night you may be tired in the morning while having breakfast with them. If you are spending too much money gambling then that leaves less funds for other more important things. And if you are hiding gambling behaviors you are reducing the trust in your relationships.
