Earlier this month, Parle had the sweet opportunity of joining the Train-Like-a-Mascot the Ultimate Workout Experience hosted by TYLENOL,  held at The Ground in New York City. Led by Jerome Bartlett—a professional mascot trainer recently featured in The New York Times. Jerome has trained organizations such as the Cleveland Browns, Houston Astros, Los Angeles Clippers, and Phoenix Suns so we were in for a unique experience.

A group of us engaged in a fun and vigorous work out session. It was led by Jerome and “Terry” the mascot (who would later be demasked). They debunked all the misconceptions that one might have surrounding the amount of athleticism required for the furry fun starters at our favorite sports events. We tried several techniques and while some were a little strenuous, we spent most of the time smiling, encouraging each other and pushing ourselves to step out of the norm and wear the shoes of a mascot (literally, we all wore furry mascot feet).

Already this year, Tylenol has donated $50,000 ($10,000 to five different college programs) to help fund and improve mascot programs. Their new commercial is set to air during some of this season’s biggest football games. Tylenol, which has been the most reliable pain relief brand for decades, is a fitting brand to support this unconventional form of pain relief – the promotion of joy and unity.

Later in the event, after literally being a disguised burst of light and the joy the entire session, Charlie Bird, a national mascot championship award winner, revealed himself. He reflected with us on how hard he worked during college days on the mascot team, sometimes using his last $5 to wash his uniform, “but that’s how much some of these mascots love what we do, it’s so fun to just get a crowd going and be part of a team and create something special and it does take a lot of work, but there are people who are passionate about it so I am really am grateful,” Bird shared. “When I heard, Tylenol was going to put $50,000 towards 5 different collegiate teams I was over the moon because I remember how much that could’ve helped me when I was 22.” Charlie then treated us with a special triple back flip trick! He couldn’t help himself, he was bursting with good energy and wanted to share!

I later spoke to Jerome about all the things people don’t know about mascots and the fact that student athletes might not even think of it as a lane. He says, “do it!” “You can be as silly and goofy as you want, and nobody knows it’s you!”

He also shared one of his most memorable and rewarding moments of his career as a mascot. Dressed as a cow and visiting hospital rooms, one toddler had her first interaction in days created by Jerry’s playfulness. He turned around to find her mother hysterically crying happy tears, this was 15 years ago.

Jerry emphasized how rewarding his career has and we agreed that the world could use more of the essential elements of a mascot’s job – simply spreading joy and mostly, bringing people together.

This season has been riddled with waves of the common cold, viruses like the flu, RSV, norovirus and more, which have been add-ons to the overwhelming stress of inflation, job insecurity, political uncertainty and weather temperatures lower than we have seen in years, but while we’re going through these rough times there are two staple things we can count on that have a history of making us feel better–Tylenol and sports!
