One of the most promising rappers Rick Ross picked up and pushed forward in last summer’s MMG dissemination, Pill has long since left the stable but not the style.

With an enthusiastically throaty, growling interpretation of the raw aggression currently dominating the trap music scene, Pill stands apart from similar acts like Wocka and Gunplay by virtue of his brief little flashes of brilliant word play beyond the scope of the other two (whom, it should be noted, are solid in their own right, particularly the bombastic Gunplay). Proof is not to be found in this freestyle, unfortunately, although Pill does manage to put some new spins on the old pussy whip while pretty handily outmaneuvering the beat’s original tenant, 2 Chainz.

DJ Spinz’ slow, guttural production fits Pill’s voice like a glove, and he does an admirable job getting on top of it, as Southern style currently dictates, rather than shading in-between or relying on a hook. Listen close for an apparent Nintendo reference and a reinterpretation of 2 Chainz’ “I go by Tity 2 Necklace” lyric.

It is not that Pill does not handle the track, or that it is particularly lacking in any way, especially for a few bars kicked over a deep beat. But to really get the hype around Pill, listen to his verse on “Rise” off of MMG’s Self Made Vol. 1 and understand why he is the most eloquently violent voice in the South.
