In honor of International Women’s Day, Tessa Thompson, David Oyelowo and Narsan Shire have teamed up with Girl Rising, a non-profit behind the global campaign for girl’s education and empowerment for the film Brave Girl Rising.
The 20-minute film written by poet Warsan Shire, the poet behind Beyonce’s visual album Lemonade, followed 17-year old Narso. She has been living at Dadaab refugee camp since the age of seven. The voice-over is done by Thompson and Oyelowo narrates the introduction of Brave Girl Rising. The young girl is continuing her education while still gaining inspiration from women in her life. The organization says the film is about, “how hope, love, and friendship can propel us beyond even the most bleak of circumstances.”
Girl Rising launched it’s campaign back in 2012 partnering up with India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Thailand and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The creation and distribution of Brave Girls Rising partnered with the International Rescue Committee, HP and Citi. The short film is available on You Tube.
About Tessa Thompson: Tessa Lynne Thompson is an American actress who is 38 years old. She was born in Los Angeles, California and her height is 5’4.” She made an appearance in the productions of The Tempest and Romeo and Juliet, and then later earned an NAACP Theatre Award nomination. She is one of the contributors to Brave Girl Rising.
