The King of Pop’s impending biopic, “Michael,” has at long last cast its lead actor. Jaafar Jackson, nephew of Michael Jackson, will portray his late uncle in the feature film. In 2019, reports initially surfaced that Graham King (“Bohemian Rhapsody” producer) obtained the rights to make a movie premised on the “complex life” of Michael Jackson. The rights to the singer’s music King had also procured to use in the motion picture. Several years later, now Antoine Fuqua (director of “Training Day” and “Emancipation“) is aboard the project as director and shaping the biopic for blockbuster status.

Katherine Jackson, mother of Michael Jackson, spoke about her grandson starring in the biopic: “Jaafar embodies my son. It’s so wonderful to see him carry on the Jackson legacy of entertainers and performers.” Graham King shared about Jaafar: “I met Jaafar over two years ago and was blown away by the way he organically personifies the spirit and personality of Michael.” King said before electing to go with Jaafar as the biopic’s lead the team conducted a global search. Jermaine Jackson (Michael’s older brother, Jackson 5 member, producer and songwriter) is Jaafar’s father and the “Michael” lead star is his second youngest son.

It was something so powerful that even after conducting a worldwide search, it was clear that he [Jaafar] is the only person to take on this role. I am beyond thrilled that he has come on board to portray his uncle and cannot wait for the world to see him on the big screen as Michael Jackson,” said King. Fuqua said about Michael‘s nephew portraying him: “It’s incredibly exciting to watch Jaafar bring Michael to life. There was such a spiritual connection when I first met Jaafar, who has a natural ability to emulate Michael and such a great chemistry with the camera.”

The biopic is being made in conjunction with the Michael Jackson Estate, and is anticipated to include the late singer’s “most iconic performances that led him to become the greatest entertainer of all time.” It’s said the legal controversies that Jackson faced while alive will be highlighted in the movie. The “Smooth Criminal” singer had two child molestation investigations launched against him (1994 and 2005). Jackson maintained his innocence until his death in 2009.
