The Western genre is undergoing a revival in the mainstream, and one of the best offerings of recent years was Lawmen: Bass Reeves. The Paramount+ series dropped in November 2023 and was met with a strong positive response from critics.

Due to the success of the title from Chad Feehan, there’s a strong chance that there will be a second season. It would make sense for the network to take advantage of the widespread popularity of Westerns in the mainstream.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves Capitalizes on Popularity of Westerns

There’s no doubt that Westerns and Western-inspired content is firmly back in the mainstream. The modern Western Yellowstone is regarded as one of the best series of recent times, and films like The Hateful Eight and The Power of the Dog were well received.

The online casino industry is a good indicator of what’s popular as well, and it has loads of Wild West games to choose from. Wanted Dead or a Wild is one of the top games on the market, and the offering from Hacksaw Games takes players into the dusty and rugged landscape of that bygone era. There are plenty of other Western games to choose from as well, including Wild West Gold and King of the West.

These games attract a lot of players, and then these players often go in search of Western content elsewhere. That’s why it’s a great time to release Western television series, and it helped Lawmen: Bass Reeves appeal to a wide audience.

Series Met With Critical Acclaim

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is up there with the top Western series in recent times, and it has garnered an approval rating of 81 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score is even higher than that, sitting at an impressive 93 percent. With these impressive figures, it’s highly likely that Paramount+ will bring the series back for a second season.

David Oyelowo was on top form in the lead role, playing a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory of Fort Smith, Arkansas. The character was based on a real lawman from US history, who captured more than 3000 dangerous outlaws without ever getting injured. Oyelowo was accompanied by various other fine actors including Lauren E. Banks and Forest Goodluck. All these stars were praised for their performances.

New Season May Focus on a Different Character

Paramount+ knows that when it has a good series on its hands, it needs to follow it up with more content to attract a greater number of viewers. This will most certainly be the case with Lawmen: Bass Reeves, and there is already talk of a sophomore season.

Unfortunately, though, a report from Screen Rant suggests that the new offering will focus on a different character. Feehan said in an interview that if he gets a chance to make more episodes, he will focus on a different lawman or lawwoman from history.

Season Two of Lawmen: Bass Reeves will most likely happen, but it could come with a different title and a new character. Hopefully, Reeves will be explored more in the future if the next batch of episodes is successful.
