The most recent edition of Rebuilding Black Wall Street, which features prominent members of the Greenwood neighborhood, will air on Friday night on OWN (The Oprah Winfrey Network).

Prominent Tulsa rap artist and event organizer Steph Simon says he is a surprising addition to the program. Producers approached him at the Black Wall Street Liquid Lounge as he was getting his usual cup of green tea.

Simon expressed, “Like, ‘hey, we’ve been looking for you. We wanna put you in this show.'”

Outside of television, Simon has played a significant role in developing Tulsa’s hip-hop scene. His bars, as a solo artist, emphasize his upbringing in North Tulsa.

He also serves as executive producer for the music group FILA (Fire in Little Africa), which seeks to turn the devastation caused by the Tulsa Race Massacre into a triumphant narrative.

OWN expressed a special interest in FILA and inquired about Simon’s forthcoming engagements.

FILA founder Stevie Johnson, popularly referred to as Dr. View, is behind the concert on campus. He was a Nasir Jones Hip Hop Fellow at Harvard when he got the call from OWN.

Dr. View remarked, “I fundraised to bring the whole collective to Harvard to perform on the campus, and they we’re like, ‘we wanna shoot everything.'”

One of the most memorable aspects of the live performance was the elementary orchestra kids from Legacy Charter School in North Tulsa.

The Harvard performance, “Dr. View & Am’re Ford Presents Fire in Little Africa Live at Harvard University,” is currently available for viewing on several platforms.

This evening at 7 p.m., there will be a watch party at the celebrated Vernon AME Church.
