The long-awaited Coming to America sequel is coming your way, and its casting round-up just keeps getting better and better. Saturday Night Live actor-comedian Tracy Morgan has signed on to join the film’s all-star roster, which has recently added Wesley Snipes, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Rick Ross, and KiKi Layne. The exciting news that Tracy Morgan joins Coming To America cast is the latest in a bunch of recent developments.
Directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow), the Paramount-produced sequel finds Eddie Murphy reprising his lead role as African crown prince Akeem Joffer, who discovers that he has a long-lost son, Lavelle, in the states. Soon to be the king of his home nation, Zamunda, Akeem grabs his best friend, Semmi (Arsenio Hall), and journeys back to Queens, New York.
In efforts of honoring his father’s, King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones), dying wish, Akeem strives to meet the “unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda” and groom him to become the new crown prince.
Originally released in 1988, the forthcoming flick serves as a follow-up to the romantic comedy, created by Murphy, which centered his character’s voyage to America, as he searches for a lucky lady to make his bride.
Penned by Kenya Barris (Black-ish), in the Coming To America sequel, Tracy Morgan will portray Reem, a hustler in the city and brother to Lavelle’s mother (Leslie Jones), who Akeem had a one-night stand with.
Also titled Coming 2 America, Eddie Murphy is in place to produce alongside Kevin Misher, and Barris will executive produce.
Shari Headley (Lisa McDowell – Akeem’s love interest, daughter of Cleo), James Earl Jones (King Jaffe Joffer – Akeems father and King of Zamunda), John Amos (Cleo McDowell – Lisa’s father), and Paul Bates (Oha – Akeem’s manservant and bodyguard) are all set to return as well.
Coming to America 2‘s premiere is scheduled to hit box offices on December 18th, 2020.
