iGaming is a billion-dollar industry, with hundreds of companies trying to position themselves on the online map. And this is not something new either, as we have been seeing for years how companies in this internet market strive to improve both their product and reputation.

One company that has made a splash is IGT. They have joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to both combat climate change and commit to reducing carbon emissions.

Let’s see what it means that IGT has become the latest gambling enterprise to enhance climate change commitments and what this could mean for the future of the world and iGaming.

What is the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)?

To understand the topic properly, you need to know what SBTi is all about. It turns out that the Science Based Targets initiative is responsible for encouraging companies around the world to act against climate change.

By becoming a member of the program, the software vendor becomes responsible for adapting SBTi policies. This implies a low-greenhouse gas policy.

IGT is also not among the first companies to join SBTi, as currently more than 2,000 companies are committed to generating positive value for both our futures and the planet’s climate itself.

2015 Paris Agreement & IGT Partnerships

Being completely involved in the 2015 Paris Agreement on the Earth’s climate, IGT commits to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

IGT must report its progress each year to demonstrate the company’s sustainability. To do so, it has to adapt the SBTi net-zero criteria. ‘Net-zero’ refers to the scenario of releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, while doing everything possible to eliminate these gases completely.

In fact, in order to make a change, IGT joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) as early as 2017 and has been working hard ever since to achieve the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Who is IGT?

Founded in 1981, International Gaming Technology (IGT) has a long history in iGaming, having won multiple awards and released an astonishing amount of high-quality games, that seem to stand the test of time.

On top of that, the company is not only committed to economic, social, and environmental responsibilities, but each year raises the bar in legal casinos in the UK with its products and absolute customer satisfaction.

It was in 2010 when the company stopped moving solely in real casinos and gambling halls, and shifted to the online world to become part of online casinos all over the world. Since then it has created some of the best casino games – especially in mobile slots.

In fact, IGT won both the ‘Best User Experience in Mobile’ and ‘Lottery Product of the Year’ awards in 2016. This shows that apart from being an innovative and responsible company, IGT also commits to giving iGaming fans everything they could ask for.

Conclusion

As an excellent example for both iGaming and all other modern global companies, IGT has once again proven itself to be heading in the right direction. With its commitment to lowering its carbon footprint by joining the SBTi, the gaming company is showing yet again that it’s not just another casino games provider who wants to make a quick buck.

In fact, especially for a sector like online gambling, it is important to have companies like IGT. Having them as a role model can make other big names in the industry take notice of the progress and environmental awareness.

Hopefully, soon we’ll see other iGaming companies jumping on the environmental bandwagon, to make a difference in these harsh climatic times. However, until then, we can only be glad that companies like IGT are fighting to make changes in our modern online world.
