Hold on, Shaq is releasing a new album? The b-ball legend has dropped classic hip-hop tracks in the past, however, this time around he’s doing something a tad different.

O’Neal’s debut EDM album, Gorilla Warfare, is poised to elevate dubstep and electronic music to new heights.

The ten-track collaboration collection includes new music by Rated R, VRG & Blackway, CELO, Jessica Audiffred, and more emerging artists. It was made available on Friday, August 18.

Since 2015, Shaq has been performing professionally as DJ Diesel, although his passion for turntables began in 1988 while he was still a college student. His love of music has since brought him to the stage of several prestigious festivals, including Lollapalooza, where he rocked the stage in front of over 100,000 spectators.

The 19-year NBA veteran, who has won numerous basketball titles, is hoping that his increasing prominence in the dubstep scene would enable others to connect with a wider audience.

Regarding the new album’s collaborators, Shaq told Variety, “These are some of my favorites.

“I wanted to use my platform to showcase other people to the world and help these young kids out.”

The 7-footer added, “I could pay a marketing firm $500 for this, but no. I didn’t want to roll [out] the whole project. We wanted to hit people by surprise and change the way the world thinks of Diesel. I want to earn the respect from people.”

Regarding music, the former Los Angeles Lakers center is everything but an amateur. He inked a three-album, $10 million record deal with Jive Records at the beginning of the nineties. He debuted as hip hop artist Shaq Diesel in 1993.

In an interview with Genius in 2021, the Newark native explained, “I never wanted to be a rapper, but I did want the opportunity to rap with all my favorite emcees and just have fun and do the video with them; that’s what it’s all about for me.”

The four-time NBA champion has collaborated with iconic rappers such as Redman, Erick Sermon, Phife Dawg, RZA, and Keith Murray in addition to The Notorious B.I.G.
