City Girls Are Here To Make The Boys Feel Uncomfortable With Their Music

“You like the way this pussy sit in boy shorts / And it’s so tight it could smoke a Newport” is not something you will typically hear from ladies who rap. The fact that any woman would let such provocative talk come out their mouth may give some listeners pause, with many in society thinking provocativeness is only reserved for the boys. Well the City Girls are here to flip the script on Hip Hop.

JT and Yung Miami are the duo that makes the rap group City Girls, a pair of best friends: Jatavia Johnson (JT) and Caresha Brownlee (Yung Miami). These divas, female versions of hustlers, are here to give ladies one piece of advice: GET THE BAG AND DON’T MESS WITH BROKE BOYS.

City Girls are coming out of the neighborhood of Opa-Locka in Miami, FLA. Miami is home to 2 Live Crew, Trina, and Trick Daddy, it should not be hard to see where these young ladies get their influences for their music. With songs like: “How to Pimp a N**ga,” “Fuck Dat N**ga,” and “Where the Bag At?,” the evidence is clear that their lyrics are unapologetically vulgar, not caring if it makes the boys club uncomfortable.

You would think the City Girls would be bad and boujee, signed to the same label as Migos, Quality Control, but they say they are “ratchet with good pussy”. Their popular song “Fuck Dat N**ga” was what led them to get a deal with Quality Control, the song also finding spot on the Quality Control: Control the Streets Volume 1 compilation album.

It was not long, after joining Quality Control, the City Girls would drop their debut project, PERIOD, in May of 2018. PERIOD being a 16-track long mixtape with only one feature, Florida rapper Ball Greezy. Their debut is filled with songs for independent women, go-getters, and divas alike, who have a connection or like what these madams talk about.

The duo recently collaborated with Drake for the song “In My Feelings,” off the Scorpion album, is helping further their launch in the limelight. Their lyrics towards Drake, “how that neck work / F**k that Netflix and chill—what’s your net-net-net worth?,” after he asks the ladies do they love him, is becoming a popular line. In the visual released for the song, you can see Yung Miami wearing a free JT top, twerking and enjoying the limelight of mainstream attention.

Yes! When you are out here hustling, or getting to the bag in illegal ways, comes consequences. On June 30th, JT turned herself in to the authorities to serve her sentence for credit card fraud charges. She was out on bond, giving her enough time to launch her music career to a much needed height. She is expecting to come out of prison on March 21, 2020.

The day before she turned herself in the City Girls released the video for their single, “Sweet Tooth”.  The music video is directed by Gabriel Hart.

Suffering a minor setback for a major comeback. The City Girls movement has grown strong. They already let the world know girls can speak as raw, confident, and with as much swagger as the boys do. We just have to see what they have for us in the future.
