R&B veteran and sensation, Monica speaks out after recent viral video shows her attempting to aid one of her female fans during her live in concert performance.
In a now-viral clip, the “So Gone” singer jumped off the stage at Detroit’s Riverfront Music Festival on Saturday (July 22), to confront a man she saw assaulting a woman in the crowd. Talking to CNN Primetime about the incident on Monday (July 24), Monica explained what was going through her mind at the time.

“I did everything I could after seeing him strike her to prevent her from being hit again. It was very triggering for me to see a woman be assaulted by a man… It was only in my mind to… pic.twitter.com/9V7j83wrEb

“Simply put, I didn’t want to see her hurt or harmed, and her not make it back home after coming just to be a concertgoer for myself and Ashanti who was also on the show,” she said. “You know, these concerts have become what almost feels like a dangerous space and place, and I just really want that to change.”
Monica continued: “So, that was just when my instincts kicked in. I do not feel like I’m some form of superhero in any facet. But I did what I would hope that someone would do if they saw that happening to my aunt or mother, I could tell that she was — she’s definitely elder. And there was a level of fear there for me, just watching what appeared to be a situation that could have been escalated even further, I was simply trying to de-escalate it.”
She concluded: “You’re supposed to be having a good time. Everyone is supposed to make it back home to their families. And every person that travels with me knows how I feel about people.”
This is certainly not the first time Monica has been forced to halt a performance to calm the masses.
Earlier this year, she briefly stopped a performance of her hit song “Why I Love You So Much” during a concert in Washington D.C. after two partygoers broke out into a fight in the audience.
“Wait a minute, stop, stop, stop. C’mon now, I’m singing a love song; I ain’t singing ‘Knuck If You Buck,’ baby!” Monica joked, referencing Crime Mob’s raucous 2004 hit.
“Calm the fuck, calm down…Calm down. You know what, baby? They fuck you up, baby? Me too. Join the club. Take it on out of here. Take it on out of here.”
Monica then dedicated her next song to the “young lady in the pink” before performing her 2003 track “So Gone.”
