For Colored Girls film adaptation posterTyler’s Perry’s latest project, For Colored Girls film adaptation, is already stirring up an Oscar buzz. It’s an intense and compelling adaptation of the original 1974 play For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf written by Ntozake Shange.

The opportunity to work with the For Colored Girls film adaptation presented itself to Perry on numerous occasions. Even Whoopi Goldberg, who also stars in the film, contacted Perry once when she was seeking to do a revival of the play on Broadway. Back then Perry declined, but when Lionsgate Films approached him to turn the play into a motion picture, Perry accepted.

“When something keeps coming back to you like that, that means it is meant to be,” says Perry.

Audiences can expect to see stellar performances from a star-studded cast. In particular, Janet Jackson’s For Colored Girls role is of Jo, a role that we have not seen from her ever before. During a press conference for the film, Jackson stated that watching old Katherine Hepburn movies helped to prepare her for her role. It’s refreshing to see Jackson’s versatility as an actress and her commitment to delivering a commanding performance.

“I tried to really get into the character as much as I possibly could and tried to really feel what she was going through,” Janet Jackson explained of her For Colored Girls role. She graces the big screen alongside fellow actresses Loretta Devine, Kimberly Elise, Thandie Newton, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Tessa Thompson, Kerry Washington, and Whoopi Goldberg.

Shange’s play launched controversy during its initial release in 1974 and within two years became a Broadway hit. Perry used the poetry and dances from the original play and intertwined them with the dialog to tell the story of each character. For any director, that is no easy task, but Perry is not your average director. His experience with stage plays and films made him the perfect candidate to recreate this classic. Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls film adaptation will open in theaters nationwide on November 5, 2010.
