A Black couple’s home appraisal increased and went up almost half a million dollars after they got their white friend to pose as the owner of their home.
Janette Miller (Miller and Perotti Real Estate Appraisers co-owner) valued Paul Austin and Tenisha Tate-Austin’s spiffy four-bedroom house near San Francisco for around $998,000.
Feeling that their Sausalito residence was worth way more than $998,000, Paul and Tenisha asked one of their white buddies to pretend to be the owner of their home. The white pal had the house reappraised — and the worth of the home was miraculous $1.48 million.
Tenisha recounted, “We had a conversation with one of our white friends, and she said ‘No problem. I’ll be Tenisha. I’ll bring over some pictures of my family.’” She made our home look like it belonged to her.”
The angered couple elected to file a lawsuit against Miller and her establishment asserting “the appraisal was the direct product of racial discrimination.”

47-year-old Paul Austin expressed in a statement, “Having to experience everything that came with receiving the lowballed appraisal was overwhelming. Being able to tell our story and knowing we had legal recourse helped.”
Spouse, 43-year-old Tenisha Tate-Austin remarked: “The ongoing undervaluation of homes in black neighborhoods perpetuates the wealth gap between black and white families. We hope by bringing attention to our case and this lawsuit settlement, we can help change the way the appraisal industry operates, and we can start to see a different trend.”
Mrs. Austin furthered: “There are implications to our ability to create generational wealth or passing things on if our houses appraise for 50% less than its value.”

Janette Miller agreed to settle the case out of court and pay Paul and Tenisha an undisclosed amount of money.
In a twist, the settlement also requires Miller and her team to watch the documentary Our America: Lowballed.
