Only two episodes into its debut season, rumors have been circulating that HBO’s The Idol, starring The Weeknd, has been cancelled.

Page Six previously said that the contentious series, which stars Lily-Rose Depp and Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd), will not be getting a second season.

HBO, however, used Twitter to debunk the reports: “It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined. It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night.”

According to an inside source in the initial story, the show was supposed to stop after the first season. The secret source explained that “this was never intended to be a long-running show, it was always… a limited series.”

However, a different insider expressed to the media outlet: “the door is definitely still open — it’s definitely not a decision [yet]. At this point, this is normal in our process… We’re only two episodes in.”

The Idol With The Weeknd Is Not Canceled

A rising pop sensation and a cult club operator are highlighted in The Idol.

In the first episode, Depp’s Jocelyn is likened to Britney Spears, and the program, which was conceived by Tesfaye and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, is meant to be a provocative glimpse at how women are treated in the music business.

The supporting cast of the show is impressive, including Dan Levy, Troye Sivan, Hank Azaria, Di’Vine Joy Randolph, Hari Nef, Jane Adams, Eli Roth, BLACKPINK’s Jennie, and more. However, early reviews of the first episode claim that the supporting cast is insufficient to make up for The Weeknd’s subpar acting and the plot’s apparent absence.

Additionally condemned for its explicit exhibitions of sex, the second episode. The project’s initial director, Amy Seimetz, departed as a result of the sex scenes, which have been extensively discussed in a Rolling Stone story.
