Deadline reports that The Idol has been cancelled by HBO after only one season.
A HBO spokeswoman explained in a statement, “The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”
Before the series even debuted, there was controversy regarding Sam Levinson and The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) and its intimate scenes, and the original director Amy Seimetz quit.
Then, following the publication of the second episode, there were reports that The Idol had already been cancelled, leading HBO to issue a statement denying this. The tweet released back in June stated, “It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined.
“It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night.”
HBO Takes the Axe To The Idol
Tesfaye, Jennie Ruby Jane, Hank Azaria, Lily-Rose Depp, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Dan Levy, Hari Nef, Eli Roth, and Jane Adams were among the cast members of The Idol. Mike Dean, Rachel Sennott, Ramsey, Moses Sumney, and Suzanna Son also starred.
The Idol followed the complex bond between a self-help sage, cult leader, and burgeoning pop star.
This termination comes after the first season’s finale in July, which left viewers scratching their heads over how Jocelyn and Tedros’ relationship had deteriorated and perhaps lied about her mother beating her.
Six episodes were originally planned for the show, but the fifth one wound up being the last.
