With Today‘s Hoda Kotb, Jada Pinkett Smith teased her forthcoming primetime special by disclosing that she and Will Smith have been apart since 2016 and have had “completely separate lives.”
The “Jason’s Lyric” actress responded as follows to Kotb’s question on why they chose to split up instead of get a divorce:
Over the years, there have been ups and downs in Will and Jada’s matrimony, including suspicions of infidelity.
The musician August Alsina asserted in 2020 that Jada and he dated throughout her marriage. Afterwards, Jada claimed that her wedlock to Will was open.
“Jada never believed in conventional marriage,” the Fresh Prince previously explained in a GQ interview.

“Jada had family members that had an unconventional relationship. So she grew up in a way that was very different than how I grew up… We have given each other trust and freedom, with the belief that everybody has to find their own way. And marriage for us can’t be a prison,” he added.
Regarding the reason behind the breakup, Jada disclosed to Kotb, “I think by the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.”

However, the “Set It Off” star just couldn’t bring herself to finalize the divorce. “I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce,” she shared. “We will work through whatever. And I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”
She did, however, reveal that she and the “Ali” actor are no longer living together. In her forthcoming biography Worthy, scheduled for release on October 17, Jada will go deeper into her union to Will.
