The diva is dead! Amanda Diva is dead too! She has been revived into Amanda Seales, her birth name. A native of Orlando, Florida, Seales has been in the entertainment industry nearly all of her life. Mainly known as MTV VJ Amanda Diva, some people may also know of her status as a Hip-Hop artist, releasing her first mixtape in 2004 entitled, It’s Bigger than Hip-Hop Vol. 1.  She defines herself as “a true Renaissance woman,” and has showcased her talents throughout the years.  Seales is a Jane of many talents; a painter, an accomplished recording artist, pop-culture critic, designer, DJ, actress and scholar. Her latest conquest is her one-woman musical, “Death of the Diva.”
“Death of the Diva” is a one-woman musical narrative told by Seales of how the modern-day “Diva” has ruined the origin of the word. In a fan preview event at Brooklyn’s Free Candy, Seales gave the crowd a beautiful sneak peek of the play. Ranging from her views of the modern day divas like J. Lo asking for a candle to be flown from overseas to be put in her dressing room, to the rapper who slangs the word “bitch” around, but then has a newborn daughter.  Seales touches on the ills that women in the entertainment industry are portraying and being portrayed as.
“Death of a Diva” aims to “challenge pop-culture’s portrayal of women, one unique and colorful character at a time.”   It is what the women without voices have always wanted to say to the pop-culture society, that they are statistics and they can be so much more than what is being represented. Seales has cemented herself as the revolutionary leader for the modern day woman and young females. There is so much more than reality television and there is more than showing your body for the entertainment of men.
Death of the Diva opens at the Helen Mills Theatre, March 23-25 and March 30-April 1.Tickets are available for purchase at www.deathofthediva.com.
