Teri Woods’ True To The Game Novel Coming To The Big Screen, Film Set For This Fall
True To The Game, the first novel published by renowned authoress Teri Woods, is a story based in the 1980s about life on the streets of Philadelphia. Gena, a young girl from the projects in Philly, meets Quadir, a slick talking New York millionaire working with the Cartel. Unbeknownst to her, falling in love with Quadir will lead to a life of crime, drugs, and money. Both find themselves caught up in this dangerous world and learn too late that, once you’re in it, there’s no way out. The novel, originally published in 1998, became a best-selling street classic that touched the hearts of readers nationwide. It fueled the movement of African-American literature and shined a light on a world that many have never experienced.
Roughly two decades later, True To The Game is finally coming to the big screen. The film was written by Nia Hill and directed by Preston A. Whitmore II, best known for popular movies like This Christmas and Civil Brand. Gena will be played by newcomer Erica Peeples, and Quadir will be played by Columbus Short, known for his signature roles in Stomp The Yard and Scandal. The cast also includes award-winning actress Vivica A. Fox, reality TV star Draya Michele, and the late great Nelsan Ellis. The film is certain to be a blockbuster considering its all-star cast and outstanding popularity throughout the country. The film is set to premiere in September of this year.
The original True To The Game became a three-book series which leaves fans wondering, “Could there be sequels in store for the soon to be released film?” Unfortunately, the answer to this question is uncertain. Woods’ other novel Dutch has also been picked up by Imani Entertainment Group, although a filming date has not yet been set. Nevertheless, this surely is a victory for author Teri Woods who had struggled for years to publish her book and now has sold over two million copies. It is a success story that is sure to inspire many for years to come.
