Kamala Harris Celebrates Hip-Hop 50!

On September 9, the VPOTUS is hosting a house party to honor Hip-Hop’s 50th anniversary. It will be the first time ever that a vice president in office has hosted such a celebration.

The Hollywood Reporter claims that 400 people, including actors, artists, cultural trailblazers, and business titans, will attend Harris’ party, which will feature 20 performers.

Live Nation Urban and the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective are organizing the event.

Speaking at the occasion, Kamala is anticipated to highlight the efforts made by her administration to promote the arts. Some of the musicians scheduled to play at the Vice-President’s house party are Jeezy, MC Lyte, Roxanne Shante, and Common.

“The Recording Academy and the Black Music Collective have had a tremendous year paying tribute to and honoring the legacy of Hip-Hop in its milestone 50th year. Taking the celebration to our nation’s capital alongside Vice President Harris is truly something special and I look forward to a historic day,” stated Mason Jr.

Valeisha Butterfield Jones, the Recording Academy’s Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer, furthered, “Music plays a profound role in shaping our culture, and Black music has been the cornerstone in the development of the world’s dynamic soundscape. The Recording Academy has entered a new chapter of transformative change, and we are honored to partner with Color of Change as we work together to set new standards to elevate Black music creators and build a more diverse and equitable industry.”

The first Black Music Collective concert, which took place in 2022 during Grammy Week, recognized Black-founded record label Love Renaissance (LVRN) as well as John Legend, Summer Walker, DJ D-Nice, Shelley (FKA DRAM), Dvsn, 6Lack, and MC Lyte. Missy Elliott, Dr. Dre, Sylvia Rhone (CEO of Epic Records), and Lil Wayne were recognized by the group in 2023.
