A Guide to Checking Up On Your Loved Ones With Intention

It’s more crucial than ever to check up on your loved ones with intention in today’s hectic world of work, activities, and constant movement. Nobody can tell you what they are going through. They may be struggling even if they appear to be doing well.

Behind closed doors, the individual who seems to be the life of the party can be struggling with depression. Even though you may be happy every day, there may be someone near you who is quietly bearing suffering.

We all experience life in different ways, so never assume that everything is fine. This is why purposefully checking up on your loved ones is so important. Someone might just need a quick phone call or message.

Why It’s Important to Check In Intentionally

The impact of intentional checking in on someone’s general well-being and mental health can be profound. Your support can be helpful to someone who is experiencing a seasonal change, anxiety, grief, or any other type of emotional struggle.

The following are some benefits of checking up on your loved ones with intention:

  • Enhanced feeling of safety: People feel safer and are more equipped to handle difficulties when they have regular, healthy conversations with their loved ones.
  • More support: Feelings of loneliness might be lessened simply by knowing that someone is checking in.
  • Reduced stigma: People who get social support are less likely to feel condemned or isolated in their struggles, which helps to dispel the stigma associated with mental health.

How to Check In on Your Loved Ones: Practical Methods That Work

The saying “check in on your loved ones” is familiar to all of us. However, what does that look like in reality? Here are some practical methods for checking in on your loved ones thoughtfully and purposefully:

1.Plan to check up on your loved ones: Set up a visit or phone call. Setting aside time guarantees that you will offer them your undivided attention. Engage in active listening, stay in the moment, and refrain from making the discussion about you. The objective is to connect, not simply talk.

2. Set Up a Date: Arrange a fun activity for your loved one, either in person or virtually. Engaging in activities they enjoy, such as taking a stroll, watching a movie, or exploring a hobby together, demonstrates your real concern for them.

3. Make the Correct Inquiries: Stop asking “How are you?” all the time. Tray alternative and specific questions like; “Hey, I noticed something that made me think of you! How are you?, “After reading your post, I wanted to make sure everything is going well for you”; “How have you been sleeping these days?”

Tips: Avoid blaming the person for the problem when you inquire about a mental health condition. Rather than saying “Your depression,” say “How has depression been this week?” Internalized shame is lessened as a result.

4. Use Various Communication Methods: Send a text, phone, FaceTime, or even a card if it has been a long time. Particularly for those who haven’t been active on the internet lately, small acts of kindness like handwritten letters or nostalgic social media postings may make someone’s day.

5. Always Make a Follow-Up: A single check-in is insufficient. Follow up whether you messaged, called, or offered assistance. Show your loved one that you are always there for them. Words have greater meaning when they are followed by deeds.

Final Thoughts

Put everything else aside when your loved ones need you. A sincere chat may make a big difference, since you never know what someone could be going through.

Let your concerns be genuine, whether you’re checking in in person or digitally. Sometimes, that worry can be just what they need right now. Checking in on your loved ones intentionally doesn’t have to be difficult. It only requires awareness, empathy, and the readiness to present oneself lovingly.
