Veteran Grammy nominated songstress Angie Stone, delivered her signature buttery smooth, honey-toned vocal stylings, bathed in that undeniable gritty soulfulness, for well over four and a half decades. Throughout her vast musical journey, the native Columbia, South Carolina, songstress amassed four top 10 albums; including a number one, and a top 10 single, and several gold-certified albums. Stone released 10 studio albums, including the most recent, 2023’s Love Language.  Overall, Stone sold more than ten million units worldwide.  Angie Stone songs have been able to stand the test of time and were at the forefront of the Neo-Soul era of R&B, dominating airwaves while others emulated her sound and passion.

Angie Stone first entered the industry as a member of the Hip-Hop trio Sequence, delivering songs like, “Funk You Up” (1979), the second release on Sugar Hill Records and the first rap single by an all-female group. Following a brief period with the post-new jack swing R&B act Vertical Hold, Stone began a lasting solo career.

In the late 90s, Stone became the envy of many many women, when she dated singer D’Angelo, who at the time was in the prime of his own R&B career.  She gave birth to his son, Michael D’Angelo Archer II in 1998.

Angie’s health was filled with ups and downs with fans often commenting on her appearance.  Some knew, while others speculated different reasons, but Stone was diagnosed with type-2 Diabetes, one of the three million African-Americans diagnosed with the illness in the United States. The battle with the illness forced Angie to take full charge of her health.  Stone became one of the spokespersons for F.A.C.E. Diabetes, the national Fearless African- Americans Connected and Empowered campaign, created to build awareness and foster support for African Americans with type-2 diabetes.  Diabetes never controlled her life.

Angie Stone songs and remembranceOn March 1, 2025 Angie Stone passed away in a car accident.  At around 4a.m. she and members of her band were heading back to Atlanta from a gig that took place the night before in Mobile, AL. when an 18-wheeler truck struck Stone’s sprinter causing it to flip three times. Angie was declared deceased at the scene of the accident. Everyone else she was traveling with survived the accident, although 8 others were injured.

Her music will live on forever.  She is survived by her daughter Diamond, son Michael, and her 2 grandkids.  She was 63 years old.

We had the pleasure of talking with Angie Stone a couple of times in her career. In one such interview she talked about having a longstanding career and how she reached this point.  Her quote that day feels important for this moment.

“What’s sustained me,” Stone shared, “is the fact that God allowed me to go through some of the things I’ve gone through in my life because he knew at the core of who I am, the humble spirit that I am, he knew that she would be the one who survives and that I would tell the story the right way. I think the fact that I’ve been reared up the right way in terms of knowing who the Lord is, and the important role that he plays in my life, I think that God trusted me to be the one to tell other up ‘n’ coming artists how important it is to keep their eyes on him.”

Let’s dive into some of those timeless Angie Stone songs.

“Brotha”

Maybe the biggest song of her career, 2001’s “Brotha” was a smash hit for her J Records debut album, Mahogany Soul.

“Baby” featuring Betty Wright

Angie Stone’s voice with Betty Wright’s added soul.  This is a classic hit from these women featured on Stone’s album, The Art of Love & War.

“Wish I Didn’t Miss You”

Also from the aforementioned Mahogany Soul album.  You just had to be there to know why Angie Stone was one of the biggest artists in the game in 2001!

Angie Stone & Calvin Richardon Duet – “More Than A Woman”

The duet version of the song was an opportunity to introduce Calvin Richardson to Stone’s audience.  Dubbed the Prince of Soul Music, the song was a smooth rendition that fit perfectly for Stone.

“Stay For A While” featuring Anthony Hamilton

The song appeared on her Stone Love album.  While it might not have been a single, it stayed in heavy rotation in my CD player in 2004!

“I Wanna Thank You” featuring Snoop Dogg

Clearly, Stone was beloved by artists in both the Hip-Hop and R&B space.  This collaboration was the lead single from the Stone Love album.

“Kiss All Over Your Body”

Jumping to 2009’s Unexpected album, this song was a stand out on the project.  An average fan might not be familiar, but Angie was in her duffle with this one and it’s one of my favorite Angie Stone songs.

“2 Bad Habits”

The lead single from 2015’s Dream album, Stone was always extremely vulnerable in her music.  This was one of those times.

Angie Stone & Jaheim – “Gonna Have To Be You”

I dare you to listen to this ballad and not fall in love with the song.  A duet with Jaheim, in 2019… Silky smooth!

“Kiss You”

The song was featured on her last album, 2023’s Love Language.  Up-tempo with a classic sample… yes, please!

“Good Man”

Sadly, this is her last music video.  Angie Stone remained dedicated to the music until her last days.  From beginning to end, her catalog was a joy to listen to and this song was no different.
