“Swagger with some content. Something you can bop to.” Nick Vibes, one third of the Louisville, Kentucky Hip-Hop group, Voice, defined their music well with this line from their single “What Chu Sed.” Webster’s dictionary defines an anomaly as an irregularity or something that deviates from the normal expectations. Nick Vibes, Dre Vice, and Suave Duave have entitled their upcoming album The Anomaly in an attempt to alert their audience of the new approach they bring to music. Their lyrics are witty and socially relevant. Their music is easy to listen to and the undeniably attractive members are quite easy to look at. These artists are on the verge of something big and Parlé Magazine wanted a piece of the action. We caught up with Nick Vibes and Dre Vice to understand where they get the audacity to stand out.
Parlé Magazine: What made you decide to pursue a career in music?
Dre Vice: We were raised on it. We love it. We have a passion for it and we saw that it was going in a direction that we felt like was lacking. We couldn’t find a solution so we decided to become it.
Parlé: And what is that solution? What do you think is the thing that is lacking?
Nick Vibes: Well we see ourselves as an addition to what’s currently going on in the Hip-Hop community. We’re trying to bring some substance back to music. But, substance mixed with commercial flavor. Something that is kind of rare. You might have seen Kanyé do it with Jesus Walks and various people have done it here and there, but really some content with some commercial flavor is what sets us apart from what everybody else is doing right now. We’re really just trying to make music where when someone is done listening to a particular record, or even the album, they can walk away feeling like they got something from it. They’ve been inspired and encouraged. Something that sticks with them. Like good soul food, we make good soul music.
Parlé: How important is it for you all to make positive music?
Dre Vice: It’s very important because there is nobody that I feel like is doing it consistently. We’re going to bring something to the game that people are going to enjoy. It’s relevant. It’s positive, but it’s still hot. A lot of times when people do it, it ends up being kinda corny,(laughs) or not consistent or they just do it and there’s no real heart in it. They’re just trying to get paid real quick or something. We’re doing this because we love it and we know we can do something that hasn’t been done before.
Parlé: Your single “Butterflys” is a hot song. What was the inspiration behind “Butterflys”?
Dre Vice: It came from the Diamond Group camp. The track was done and then the hook was done and then the video jumped ahead of its time. We were planning on doing something totally different, but everybody we played it for seemed to love it. Before the song was over, they were singing the hook and then after it went off, they were still singing it. It was something bigger than all of us.
Nick Vibes: Just like Dre said, we had actually planned to shoot another video for one of our songs called, “What Happened To The Music,” which we still plan to shoot soon. Like two weeks prior to shooting, the director called and was like “Yo, we gotta shoot this “Butterflys joint.”” He had just heard it and changed the plan last minute. We said, “let’s do it”, and that became our lead single.
Parlé: Explain what that song is about.
Nick Vibes: The song is really just about the beauty of love. It’s a real soulful/Hip-Hop/R &B record. It’s just got a good feel to it holistically.
Dre Vice: It’s about the feeling that a guy gets in his stomach when he sees a certain female. He may not have the right words to say but it’s that energy, that nervousness all balled up inside of our stomach. It’s about the inception of love.
Parlé: If you had to pick your most favorite thing about a woman, physical or not, what would it be?
Nick Vibes: Her elbows. (Laughs) I’m kidding. Everything.
Dre Vice: Her mind.
Nick Vibes: Definitely her mind. God has blessed you all with so many beautiful features to expound on. The mind and everything else.
Parlé: Have any of you found your dream woman?
Dre Vice: Wow. A few times.
Nick Vibes: (Laughs) We actually have. Our whole crew, we’re all wifed up.
Parlé: How is balancing your personal life with your music career?
Dre Vice: The beautiful thing is that all of our dream women are so supportive and they realize that this is a goal and it will make all of us better in the long run, so we’ve been blessed to be with women who have watched us grow for five plus years now. They’re finally seeing fruits of it.
Nick Vibes: But don’t get me wrong, you know, a lot of days away from the crib sometimes can get real cumbersome. We gotta make sure that when we do come back home we take care of home very well.
Parlé: I know that you all have a lot ahead of you and I’m sure the following years will bring much success. But after it’s all said and done, after many years in the business, what do you want people to remember most about Voice?
Nick Vibes: Really good question. I would say that we made a difference. That we made a lasting impact in somebody’s soul, in somebody’s life that would ring for all eternity.
Dre Vice: And that our entrance into the game was timely and timeless.
Parlé: When can we expect the album?
Nick Vibes: The Anomaly is what the album is currently titled and right now, (you can expect it) mid to late spring.
