Hold the phone — rappers faces are plastered on metro cards circulating around NYC? Mm hmm.

Hip-hop’s 50th anniversary is being commemorated this year in a number of locales, including New York City, the birthplace of the genre.

As a result of collaboration with Universal Music Enterprises, the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) trains in New York City have also developed a novel strategy for doing this.

A total of 80,000 MTA metro cards have been handed out in honor of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary.

The cards also show different NYC rappers, like Cam’ron, Pop Smoke, Rakim, LL Cool J, and other NYC luminaries.

These metro cards in NYC were first introduced by Universal as part of their “Hip Hop At 50 – Honoring 50 Years of Hip Hop: A Legacy of Rhythm, Revolution, and Soul” marketing campaign.

Hip hop icon Rakim expressed in a statement, “From standing on top of the Empire State Building to grabbing a slice at the corner pizza shop, NYC creates iconic moments that are recognized around the world.

“But it doesn’t get closer to real city life than swiping a metro card and standing clear of the closing doors. It’s an honor to be celebrating the 50th Anniversary on the streets…and now below them…of the city where hip-hop was born.”

Aside MTA, even Google is celebrating Hip Hop 50. The web hosting company is presently offering .HipHop domains to commemorate the genre’s anniversary. Visit https://get.hiphop to register a .HipHop domain name, or seek help from GoDaddy or an authorized registrar partner.
