He’s just a bachelor, looking for a partner. Trust and believe there were a ton of ladies back then, and even now that are still trying to fulfill that role for him. Maybe it’s the combination of the man baby hair and the body, or his face and dance moves. Either way in the mid to late 90s, Ginuwine was the man and “Pony” was the song that started it all.
I don’t even know how to describe, or name the sound that starts out the song… but you know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s one of the most recognizable intros to a 90s song ever. It’s sexy and just the right “grind time” tempo. Ya’ll know what I’m talking about. There were, and most likely still are many babies being made to “Pony”. It’s like automatic sexy time when the beat drop.
Act like you don’t instantly start to “body roll” when he start singing, “If your horny, let’s do it, ride it, my pony…” Fun fact: when it first came out, I thought he was saying “hungry,” not horny. Oh the naivety. But seriously, it’s one (again, of many) songs from that era that kids my age just should not have been singing! But dammit when it came on at those school dances, you was getting scooped up, and then most likely a couple minutes in… separated by the chaperone.
Ginuwine was a dirty boy in “Pony” and we ate it up. I mean he talking about “someone who knows how to ride, without even falling off” and he wasn’t talking bout no amusement park ride. Maybe it was the shock value from the blatant sexual innuendo that made it so popular, but I know that wasn’t it. “Pony” is a whole vibe. It’s the song you put on for sexy time or karaoke, but my guess is it’s sexy time 90% and karaoke 10%. However you choose to play it… it knocks.
“Pony” was released in 1996, as the first single from Ginuwine. It was featured on his album, The Bachelor. The song was written by Ginuwine, Timbaland, and Static Major. It was produced by Timbaland.
