Patrick Mahomes & Other Black Quarterbacks Who’ve Won The NFL’s MVP

Patrick Mahomes MVP

Patrick Mahomes had the votes for the NFL MVP underneath his thumb this year, obtaining the bulk of the first-place votes (48 of 50) from media panelists who cover the league on a regular basis. The second-time MVP winner (Mahomes also took home the award back in 2018) easily outclassed Jalen Hurts, raking in 490 points to Hurts’ 193 points. On Thursday (Feb. 9), via video Mahomes gave thanks his teammates and the Kansas City Chiefs organization.

Mahomes spoke: “I would never be standing here without y’all. Every day we’ve given everything we have together to win the ultimate goal, the Super Bowl. Let’s continue to go for that dream this weekend.” On Sunday (Feb. 12), the Kansas City Chiefs (16-3) and Mahomes go head-to-head with the Philadelphia Eagles (16-3) and Hurts for the Super Bowl crown. Interestingly, there has been only three quarterbacks besides Patrick Mahomes to win the MVP award in the NFL. Any idea? See below.

Cam Newton

Patrick Mahomes MVP

Back in 2015-2016, Cam Newton became the second black quarterback to win the NFL’s MVP award. Newton and his team (Carolina Panthers) ended the season nearly undefeated with a 15–1 record, best in the franchise’s history, and slid into the playoffs with a first-round bye. After defeating the Seattle Seahawks, and the Arizona Cardinals for the NFC Championship, Newton went to take on the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50. In the big game, the Broncos defeated the Panthers 24-10. On February 6, 2016, Cam Newton was crowned the NFL’s Most Valuable Player.

Lamar Jackson

Patrick Mahomes MVP

The 2019 season was all about Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. At the season’s end, Jackson had a QBR of 81.10 and along with 36 touchdown passes (the most of all quarterbacks); he also had an average of 6.9 yards per carry which led all rushers, not just quarterbacks. Jackson also won the MVP in the 2020 Pro Bowl game, after throwing two touchdowns and tossing up 185 yards. He became the youngest quarterback to start in a Pro Bowl game as well. Jackson ultimately won the NFL MVP and was voted unanimously; only other QB to win the MVP award unanimously is Tom Brady (2010). Jackson is also the second youngest player to win NFL MVP trailing only Jim Brown.

Steve McNair

Patrick Mahomes MVP

Steve McNair is the first black quarterback in the NFL’s history to win the MVP award. The difference of McNair versus Cam Newton, Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson is that he didn’t outright win the award. In 2003, McNair and the Tennessee Titans ended with a 12-4 record and made the playoffs. Following the 2003 season, McNair and Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback at the time) were both declared co-NFL MVPs. The Titans lost in the playoffs to the New England Patriots (who ended up winning the Super Bowl). When the 2003 season was over, McNair became the youngest player in the pro football league’s history to run for 3,000 yards while passing for 20,000 yards.
