There’s an I Am Richard Pryor Documentary Film In the Works
There isn’t anyone in this world who could make you laugh as hard as comedic legend and actor Richard Pryor could, whether it was in front of a mic or on the silver screen. Known for his raw, socially-critical style of stand-up comedy and unapologetic vulgarities, the Emmy-winning entertainer‘s legacy is unsurpassed, and Paramount Network only plans to continue keeping it alive. According to Variety, a new documentary film, titled I Am Richard Pryor, for the late comedian is on its way to the Viacom-owned platform. It is reported to be executive produced by Pryor’s widow, Jennifer Lee Pryor.
Directed by Jesse James Miller, I Am Richard Pryor will depict the Hollywood heavy-hitter’s rise from his unconventional childhood, growing up in an Illinois brothel run by his grandmother, where his alcoholic mother served as a prostitute, to becoming the highest-paid performer in the entertainment industry.
The docufilm, backed by filmmaker Derik Murray’s Network Entertainment, is set to feature commentary from Lily Tomlin, Tiffany Haddish, Mike Epps, Howie Mandel, Sandra Bernhard, and Jimmie Walker. Viewers can also expect to see footage from Pryor’s stand-up specials and appearances, along with sketches from The Richard Pryor Show.
“We are honored to showcase Richard’s genius while delving deeper into the man whose work established him as one of comedy’s most beloved and courageous icons,” Murray said when speaking about I Am Richard Pryor.
As of now, no official release date has been confirmed, but more details surrounding the project will become available soon.
“From very humble beginnings, my husband lifted himself up and propelled himself through an iconic comedy career during America’s rockiest years, tackling racism, transcending boundaries, finding himself and inspiring many,” said Lee Pryor in a statement. “I am confident that Network Entertainment will produce an outstanding film about my husband that does him justice both as a cultural icon and as a man.”
In December of 2005, Richard Pryor passed away from a heart attack, which was later said to be due to coronary artery disease.
However, today, he’s still recognized as the most iconic “funny man” of all time.
