Parlé Magazine: You were raised listening to soul & funk music. Will fans be hearing those styles in your new album?
Marsha Ambrosius: My dad was a bass player so I was raised amongst a lot of soul and funk but my record has many different sounds. I’ve been influenced by soul, jazz and many genres of music that you will hear in my album.
Parlé: You wrote the late Michael Jackson’s hit song, “Butterflies” and then wrote another song for him before he passed. Will we ever get to hear it?
Marsha: Yes. I have the demo version of the record. it will actually be available on my album. It’s titled, “I Want You To Stay.” I wrote and recorded the song two weeks before I found out that he passed away. There’s no denying that Michael had an influence on this album. Thank you to Michael for being such an amazing artist.
Parlé: Of course you started your career off as a member of Floetry, because you started out in the music industry as a group member, was it hard transforming into a solo artist?
Marsha: I’m not 5 years old. We (me and Natalie Stewart) were solo artists prior to being Floetry. I left the group in 2006 and pursued writing and producing with other musical artists.
Parlé: You were signed to Aftermath Entertainment but now you’re with J Records. Why the label change?
Marsha: Dre approached me about wanting to do a project together. He hadn’t had much success with R & B artists just mainly hip-hop. I worked with The Game and Busta on a few records. I had already established a working relationship with J Records from working with them previously. I had the opportunity to work with the best of the best in the music industry on my album. From Alicia Keys to Lauryn Hill and my own writing skills. Late Nights and Early Mornings is definitely an album that everyone can relate to and enjoy.
Parlé: Give me three words to describe your album?
Marsha: Does it have to be only three (laughs) umm… how about 5? Late Nights and Early Mornings.
Marsha’s album debuts on shelves March 22nd. With the feedback she’s received from all the music she’s released over the last year, Marsha Ambrosius will definitely have much success as a solo artist.
