Back To Own It All: Our Maia Campbell Interview

Maia Campbell was born in Takoma Park, Maryland. You may remember her as Tiffany from In the House as well a host of other projects she’s been featured on but, do you think you know who she really is? She is definitely more than just a pretty face.  She has strength that continues to carry her through. The last time you may have seen her was when she spilled her heart out to Iyanla. Now she’s on television again. Read the Maia Campbell interview to find out what she’s up to…

Parlé Magazine: Hi Maia! Thank you for doing this interview! We all know you played “Tiffany” on the sitcom, In the House. How did that opportunity open up?
Maia Campbell: I attended Spelman College at the time and my agent called and said Quincy Jones wants you to audition for a new show called In the House. I went in gave that audition my all and landed the role of “Tiffany Warren.”

Parlé:  How long were you on In the House and how was your transition from being on the show? What was life like after the show?
Maia Campbell:  4 years, I grew up on the show, the cast and team were like my second family. After the show it was great to be able to take on roles of actually being older.

Parlé:  Are you inspired by any actresses?
Maia Campbell: Angela Bassett, Tasha Smith, Debbie Allen, Phylicia Rashad

Parlé:  Have you faced any challenges being a woman in the entertainment industry?
Maia Campbell: Yes, the hardest part is women never get passes, there is more pressure on a woman to be perfect.

Parlé: If you could work with anyone on a movie or television show, who would it be?
Maia Campbell: Kevin Hart! and I would love to be on The Game and Single Ladies.

Parlé:  Are there any movies already released that you would have loved to be a part of?
Maia Campbell: Waiting to Exhale, Two Can Play That Game, and Scary Movie.

Parlé:  How easy or hard was the decision to be on Iyanla: Fix My Life on OWN?
Maia Campbell: It was a hard decision to open up about all my dark days to the world but in the end it was the best decision I could’ve ever made.

Parlé: Do you feel like the episode featuring you served its purpose? Were you satisfied with how you were portrayed?
Maia Campbell: The show helped me with healing! I was able to establish better relationships with family.

Parlé:  Did people understand you better? What was the response like?
Maia Campbell: YES! The world began to see my battle with mental illness more so than what the media tried to portray me as.

Parlé:  Did you learn anything from Iyanla that you hold on to?
Maia Campbell: The words that stuck out to me the most is she said, “You are the director of your life.”

Parlé:  You have two shows coming up, Life After on TV1 and Owning It All. Can you tell me about both?
Maia Campbell: Life After was a chance for me to tell the world about my life, my way. It was fun just reminiscing on my journey. Owning It All is my new reality series where I go and pay back my karmatic debts to society, but some of my friends ie. Brandy, Wesley Jonathan, Rodney Perry, Porscha Coleman, etc. help me along the way.

Parlé: Being that you haven’t been on television in a while, is there any nervousness because of your upcoming projects?
Maia Campbell: I always get nervous. Nerves are a good thing.

Parlé:  What has the response been like from your fans after hearing the news of your upcoming projects?
Maia Campbell: It is sometimes overwhelming how much people show love its truly a humbling experience.
