Marvel Decides To Go Biracial with Miles Morales For Spider-Man Comic Reboot

Miles Morales, First Bi-Racial Spider-Man in Comic Book Reboot

Marvel is doing everything in it’s power to open up it’s audience to those who historically haven’t been included in the thoughts of comic creators.  As a child growing up, I can’t remember one Black  comic book character, much less a Latino character, and it was rare for cartoons in general.  However, it seems like as the brand continues to grow and breaking the box office records becomes more of a goal, diversity is that much more important. Marvel’s latest decision to go with Miles Morales, a bi-racial Spider-Man is a big move in opening the doors for people of all races. Miles is the son of an African-American father and a Puerto Rican mother.
The move to Miles Morales comes after a failed attempt by fans via social media to get actor Donald Glover to play the role in the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man movie.

This isn’t the first move from Marvel to spark diversity, though Spider-Man might be the biggest character they have impacted.  Marvel addded a female Thor and The Falcon will be shepherding the Captain America franchise going forward.  The company even launched a character named Ms. Marvel, a Muslim teen girl.

Miles Morales was first introduced as Spider-Man when Peter Parker was killed in the Ultimate Spider-Man series.  This time, Miles will have Peter Parker around as his mentor.  Brian Bendis, the comic’s writer and co-creator explains that this move is for the long haul.  “Our message has to be it’s not Spider-Man with an asterisk, it’s the real Spider-Man for kids of color, for adults of color and everybody else.”

The first issue of the relaunched “Spider-Man” with Miles Morales hits comic stores, tablets and smart phones this Fall.
