[FIRST LOOK] Andra Day Embodies Legend For ‘The United States vs Billie Holiday’

The United States vs Billie Holiday is the biopic we didn’t know was coming, but we knew we needed it. Andra Day takes on the role of legendary blues singer Billie Holliday for a Hulu exclusive movie.  The film is Andra Day’s acting debut.

Lee Daniels directs The United States vs Billie Holiday.  The film centers around a period in time when Billie Holiday was under investigation from the Federal Bureau of Narcotics.  It also looks at Holiday’s struggles with addiction, trauma and depression. Billie Holiday came under fire with the government because of her protest song, “Strange Fruit.”

Trevante Rhodes stars as Jimmy Fletcher, an agent who was sent to infiltrate Holiday’s circle and spy on behalf of the now-dissolved FBN. Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Natasha Lyonne, Tyler James Williams, Garrett Hedlund, and LaKeith Stanfield are also featured in The United States vs Billie Holiday movie.

Lee Daniels shared with E.T. Online that, “It’s not a straight-on biopic, but it happened. Everything happened. It’s all documented, so it’s not like it didn’t happen. But it’s [also] a musical.”

Andra Day shared the trailer on social media along with the caption:
