Angela Bassett’s Oscars snub is among the most-talked-about on social media right now. Although the 2023 Oscars were mostly preordained, actress Jamie Lee Curtis‘ victory over the 911 icon for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ totally threw fellow attendees and viewers for a doozy.

As soon as Curtis was announced the winner, Bassett’s sportsmanship garnered a lot of attention from fans on social media, who praised her for her “genuine” response to the news.

Bassett, nominated for her work as Queen Ramonda (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), competed against Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu, Hong Chau, Kerry Condon, and Stephanie Curtis for The Banshees of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and The Whale.

Once Curtis’ name was called, the audience in the room gasped and reacted in disbelief. However, Bassett restrained from displaying any displeasing emotions.

Twitter, on the other hand, had much to say regarding the loss.

BUT! @TheAcademy always has to show its true colors with the bullsh*t😡, they pulled last night #Oscars2023 with #AngelaBassett 💢 Now I understand you wanted to give #JamieLeeCurtis an #Oscar but you did at the expense of Angela's performance because this was the only way.

#JamieLeeCurtis deserves her #Oscar. The people cast their vote and they chose her. No, other actors don't deserve to win based on the color of their skin. Sorry, not sorry #AngelaBassett.

After Bassett’s shocking defeat, actors Jonathan Majors and Michael B. Jordan acknowledged her while they were on stage presenting an award. Jordan remarked, “Hello Auntie,” and Majors added, “We adore you.”

For her depiction of Tina Turner in the biopic What’s Love Got to Do with It, Bassett was previously nominated for a ‘Best Actress’ Oscar in 1994. Holly Hunter beat her that evening for the lead in The Piano.
