On July 22, the rapper YNW Melly, murder trial ended in a mistrial due to the 12 jurors who couldn’t not come to a decision.
YNW Melly Murder Trial Details
As we know, the young Florida rapper who’s birth name is Jamell Demons, was charged with a double murder in the shooting his two friends Anthony Williams and Christopher Thomas Jr.
Prosecutors state that the shooting was part of a gang related act that took place in the Jeep the night of October 26, 2018. Cortland Henry, also known as YNW Bortlen, was the driver the night of the incident. Defense claims that YNW Melly did not shoot the two male victims due to the fact that they were very close friends.
If YNW Melly would have gotten convicted of the double murder, he would be facing the death penalty. The law was signed by Governor Ron DeSantis back in April of 2023.
But what does this mistrial mean for YNW Melly?
Due to the unanimous decision of July 22, YNW Melly will still face the charges at hand but he will be held until the court reaches an official decision.
As of now, YNW Melly defense team and state will meet July 28 to come to a conclusion as to what will happen next understanding that he will have to go through a retrial based on the jurors decision.
Until then, YNW Melly will continue to be held in the Broward’s jail until the Judge come to an official decision, from there the trial will continue with a new juror.
More details will be disclosed come Friday, July 28th as the court comes to a decision as to what to do next.
