Ivory Scott isn’t your ordinary R&B singer. He’s also a singer/songwriter and producer who has helped create many songs that you have probably heard and love.  Those gems include “Thique” (Beyonce), “Toxic” (Tink), “Baddest” (Young Bleu) and so many others. But now, Ivory Scott’s new EP is revealing who he is and giving music a different type of heartbeat.  We get into the depths of the Ivory Scott story, in our Ivory Scott interview below.

Ivory Scott’s Before Ebony EP represents his creativity with music and an understanding that placing himself in the spotlight is more than just having his own music in the world, but allowing for the world to understand who Ivory Scott truly is. With features from Sukihana, Queen Najia and Eric Bellinger, Ivory Scott has created an EP that will have the streets talking.

From behind the scenes to now being in the spotlight, Ivory Scott steps into the ring when it comes to longevity in the game as an R&B artist. The journey has been long, but he is creating a space for creativity and positivity as he showcases a new way of telling his story.

Parlé: How has the transition been from being a singer/songwriter, producer to now stepping into the spotlight?

Ivory Scott: My vision for coming out as a solo artist after being a singer/songwriter was always in my vision. I used to look up to Babyface, The Dream and Ne-Yo who were singers & songwriters, but also artists. I think it was always about timing for me. This time was the right time, but I also wanted creative control as well because I have a good vision for what I want to do for myself. A lot of the time, labels don’t take your vision, or they might have their own vision for what they want to do for you. So, it was important for me to get with a team, a label that saw my vision for the way I saw it. I mean it’s a transition but it’s fun, I love it.

Parlé: Before going solo, you also worked with so many other artists. Who were the other artists that you have worked with?

Ivory Scott: Artists such as Chris Brown, Lil Durk, Fireboy, Ed Sheran, Latto and Kodak Black, I mean everybody in the industry really. This past year I’ve had like 50 releases. It’s sweet!

: Tell us about your EP, Before Ebony?

Ivory Scott: So basically, it’s a mixture of all the different energies that I give off when I am working with other artists, but this is like the Ivory Scott version of it. It’s my baby, my first-born baby. Even the songs that you have been hearing just like the song I did with Eric Bellinger we did that song like two years ago, but we knew that it was going to be a song that would be a part of my project. It’s magic, its wild for real. I have Sukihana up there on “No Motion.” There are so many different genres on this EP, I can play the guitar, piano, really be a songwriter and then I can really get into these bags and be ratchet. At first it was scary because it’s like who is he, but I don’t place any limitation on myself. I don’t feel like Picasso put any limitations on himself or any of the other great artists, so why should I. Why should I box myself in and say “oh I am a R&B artist because I do R&B well,” or say “I only do Hip-Hop because I do Hip-Hop well.” I was treading lightly asking myself if I should drop “No Motion” on the EP or should I wait, but it felt like it should happen, so we will see.

Parlé: What do you want the people to feel from this project?

Ivory Scott: Man, this is an unbelievable story, I want them to feel the music, and this is why. When I was growing up my childhood best friend was deaf. He used to come down to my crib and he use to sit on top of my amplifier while I was making beats, and he could feel the music. So, I always said, I didn’t make music for people to hear it, but I make music for people to feel it. I want people to feel the music, nobody really telling anyone what’s really going on, the industry is heartless. Everybody needs a heartbeat and that’s what Ivory Scott is going to bring.
