Fans React to Lupita Nyong’o and Selema Masekela Break Up

Fumbled much? Fans react to Lupita Nyong’o and Selema Masekela Break Up on X, formerly known as Twitter, with distaste, compassion and of course, jokes. Lupita and Selema’s break up have been making headlines after she published a vulnerable Instagram post on Thursday, October 19. While she didn’t mention Selema by name, Lupita wrote:

There are much more important things going on in the world right now, and my thoughts are with those who are deeply suffering.

At this moment, it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust…

I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception. I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light when I have regained my strength enough for me to say, “Whatever, my life is better this way.” But I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I am feeling is equal to the measure of my capacity for love. And so, I am choosing to face the pain, cultivating the courage to meet my life exactly as it is, and trusting that this too shall pass. The promise, they say, is that a tender heart is what gives birth to fearlessness. I hope it’s true… I share this to keep it 💯, and hoping that the knowledge of my experience might be useful to someone else out there experiencing the grip of heartbreak who is poised to try and escape from the pain and miss out on the wisdom that comes from it. #Breakup

Lupita’s post implies (or better yet has fans assuming) that Selema cheated on her since she mentioned she had to publicly dissociate [herself] from someone [she] can no longer trust. Lupita’s post also comes after being photographed with Joshua Jackson’s, Dawson’s Creek star, at the Janelle Monáe concert at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, CA. as reported by TMZ. Jackson apparently is going through a breakup of his own after his wife recently filed for divorce.

Lupita is known for her iconic roles in movies like Black Panther, Us,  21 Years a Slave and Black Panther 2. She is also an author of a children’s book, Sulwe. When fans got wind of Lupita and Selema’s break up, they wasted no time sharing their distaste for Selema, compassion for Lupita and in true fan fashion, jokes about Lupita’s ex “fumbling her.”

How did these two even start dating? According to E News,

“The former couple’s connection traces back years, as Selema, a TV host and designer, confessed to having an apparent crush on the Us actress in 2016. ‘Hypothetically speaking of course,’ he tweeted at the time, ‘let’s say you’re seated behind Lupita Nyong’o on an airplane, what would be your opening line?’ Things had gone from hypothetical to IRL by March 2022, when she attended the store opening of his surf apparel company Mami Wata in Venice, Calif.” Lupita then went Instagram official with the fashion founder in December 2022, writing at the time, “We just click!” and “#thisismylove.”

Lupita and Selema’s break up continues the #seasonofthebreakups narrative we’ve been seeing unfold in the entertainment industry. This year, Jeezy and Jeannie Mai divorced; Teyana Taylor confirmed split from Iman Shumpert; and Tia Mowry finalized her divorce from Cory Hardrict.
