Week of 1/2/11 – 1/8/11, Week in Review!

Well it looks like the New Year is getting off to a crazy start. Oprah debuted her new network, R&B stars took their beefs to Twitter instead of the streets and a crazed gunman brought tragedy to Arizona. In case you missed it, here’s your Week in Review, the first week of 2011.

OPRAH GETS OWNED

Oprah Winfrey, aka The Queen of Media, may be ending her flagship talk show’s 25-year run this year, but on New Years Day, she debuted her very own channel. The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) debuted with strong ratings and reviews. The channel’s biggest ratings winner was a behind the scenes look at the final season of Winfrey’s talk show. First she picked the president, and then she got her own TV station. What’s next for this small town country girl turned media maven? We’re not sure, but we hear world domination is still up for grabs.

B(ISEXUAL)2K?

Omarion denied rumors that he was bisexual after a press release was sent out, allegedly by the singer, stating that he was bisexual. The former B2K front man and his PR squad quickly shot down the press release as a hoax, and reaffirmed his heterosexuality via his Twitter account. All of this comes on the heels of the epically ridiculous Twitter war between Chris Brown and Omarion’s former B2K band mate Raz-B that went down just before New Year’s.

R & B golden child turned social pariah Chris Brown got into an epic Twitter beef with former B2K band member Raz-B. It all started when Raz-B made a twitter post referencing men like Eric Benet and Chris Brown disrespecting their respective exes Halle Berry and Rihanna. Brown shot back with a series of comments many would classify as homophobic while Raz-B proceeded to allegedly “out” Brown as homosexual. Brown further made jokes referencing the sexual abuse Raz-B alleges he suffered at the hands of then-manager Chris Stokes, enraging members of the LGBTQ community, sexual abuse survivors and their supporters.

Now we’re really not trying to come down on anyone, but is it just us or all these dudes derserve at least one major side eye a piece for all these antics? Smh!

THE REDEMPTION OF TED WILLIAMS

The New Year got off to a fantastic start for Ted Williams, a homeless man with a silky speaking voice in Ohio. A passerby filmed him as he begged for money on the street. Williams, a former radio announcer, still had his golden vocal cords, even after years of drug and alcohol abuse. After the passerby posted the video on YouTube, everyone from the Cleveland Cavaliers to Oprah (yes, OPRAH) came calling to hire the velvety-voiced announcer. Here’s to you Mr. Williams!

ARIZONA CONGRESSWOMAN SHOT

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz) was shot in the head while wrapping up a community event at a Safeway grocery store in Tucson, AZ. She has survived emergency surgery, though her total prognosis is still murky. The attack also claimed the lives of nine-year-old girl and a federal judge. The tragedy has many calling for an end to angry, vitriolic rhetoric that seems to have grabbed hold of the nation over the past few years. The alleged gunman, Jared Loughner, is currently in custody but reportedly refusing to cooperate with police.

TINY GETS HANDS ON FOR T.I.

T.I. may be stuck behind bars for a probation violation, but that didn’t stop the rapper from enjoying some, ehem, “hands on” time with his wife, former Xscape singer and reality star Tameka “Tiny” Cottle. Guards allegedly busted the two while Tiny was in the midst of giving her hubby an “old fashioned” while in the visitors room. Prison rules stipulate that the most action an inmate can get is a quick kiss and embrace during a visit, but we’re guessing the couple didn’t get the memo. While it was a silly thing to do (does T.I. really need to be in any more trouble at this point?), it is nice to see a married couple still have that freaky spark. We’d give Tiny & T.I. a hand but it seems they’ve already got that covered! T.I. & Tiny, all hands on deck! Oh! Don’t worry folks, we’ll be here all week!

This has been this weeks Week in Review!
