All of the honorees delivered heartfelt speeches of thanks and praise to those who have helped them reach their goals and gave words of wisdom to those who aspire to be where they are. Geneva Reed- Veal, however left the most influential mark on the crowd while accepting her award for Social Justice. Ms. Reed-Veal is the mother of Sandra Bland, the woman who was found by police, hanged to death, in her jail cell in 2015 after a “routine traffic stop”.

Ms. Reed-Veal started off her speech by acknowledging the fact that the African American community and some in the world are feeling defeated because of the recent presidential election, where Donald Trump was elected our 45th President of the United States. She said “this is not the time to pass out. Our candidate (Hillary Clinton), lost the election, I lost a baby.”

She went on to offer a hope for the future by saying “when God allows you to experience something that you believe has rocked your world, think about it. When you come back from that thing, the next thing that happens to you is phenomenal. When you make it through, you make it to.” She made it known that the movement to raise awareness on the ongoing issues within the African American community is not over. She said “the new movement is #ShutUpForWhat. When you see it and when you hear it, it is true. You heard it from me.”
