Nas Street Dreams Series Gets Green Light

BET is doing pretty big things right now, fresh off of the highly successful New Edition miniseries. It looks like they’re gonna keep going with these kinds of projects, since they’ve just given the green light to another idea. A pilot for an hourlong series based on the life of Nas, called Street Dreams, from creator Jonathan Levine.

According to Deadline, the concept for Street Dreams has been around for a couple of years. Originally, it was going to be a half-hour comedy set in New York City over at XBox Entertainment Studios, but that fell through.

The Nas Street Dreams series is “described as a show about music, family and the trials and tribulations of the rap game, it tracks the ascent of Nas, a young man from the Queensbridge projects who will go on to become a famous rapper, as he evolves from young man to crack dealer to rapper to adult.”

Jonathan Levine, who wrote the pilot and will be directing, is also a native New Yorker, with a strong love for ’90s hip-hop. For those of you who don’t know, among his films is The Wackness, an indie project he wrote and directed, which won the Audience Award at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. That film was all about a young teen growing up in the mid-90s listening to Hip-Hop.

It’s expected that, along with writing and directing, Levine will also executive produce the show along with Nas. No word yet on who will be playing the rapper in the show. Nas most recently was an executive producer on the original Netflix series The Get Down.
