It’s vital to maintain a work/life balance to help you relax and unwind every day. However, it can be hard to detach from work when you’re receiving constant emails or phone calls. You might also feel lethargic following all the tension built up in your body throughout the working day.

If you’re looking for helpful ways to disengage from your job once you’ve left the office, find out how to disconnect after a stressful day.

Develop an Evening Ritual

If you want to detach from work the minute you arrive home, you should develop an evening ritual. The two routines will help to separate both environments. For example, you could start your evening by cooking a healthy meal, watching your favorite show or enjoying a 20-minute soak in the bath. It will give you something to look forward to all day long, and the familiar routine will put a little distance between you and the workplace.

Set Boundaries for When You’ve Left the Office

It is vital to be strict when it comes to your personal and professional life. Set boundaries so that you do not check your email once you have left the office, or you don’t take any work-related calls until the next working day.

It will allow you to take a break from your job, so you can simply relax, have fun, and spend quality time with your loved ones. If you are worried about leaving clients, colleagues or your boss waiting for a reply, set an out-of-office email message or voicemail.

Play a Fun Game Alone or with Loved Ones

Forget all the stresses and tension built up throughout the day by playing a fun game alone or with your loved ones. For example, you could play a board game with the whole family, or you could go head-to-head with your friends with live game streaming.

Don’t Leave Your Work on Display

A work planner, laptop, briefcase or professional document will be a constant reminder of your job. If you want to detach from work, you should make sure it is out of view during the evening. Out of sight is out of mind, so it will make it easier to disconnect from the office and enjoy some downtime.

Avoid Overcommitting Yourself

While you might be willing to accept extra work to climb a career ladder, you should avoid taking on too many projects, as you might need to work from home to manage your busy workload.

Not only can this result in increased pressure and stress, but it can also impact your relationships with your loved ones. It may also cause you to burn out, which could affect your health, performance, and aspirations. It doesn’t make you a bad employee to say no to extra work if you already have many tasks on your to-do list.
