Why The Way You Look Matters So Much

Whether we like it or not, we will always be judged by society based on our appearance. We shouldn’t let ourselves stereotype people into set-in-stone categories based on their fashion style or how they look as it will be inevitable for us to fall victim to the prejudices of either looks or age. However, most people can’t help but process information through judgment and stereotyping. For this reason, many people feel the weight of the injustice of being treated in a certain way based on their looks. Here are some reasons why the way you look looks matters this much.

Your Emotional State

The way we look can affect the way we feel and act greatly. Since our confidence levels are directly linked to our looks, many emotional issues might stem from being unsatisfied with how we look. While it shouldn’t be relevant, still not being 33satisfied with how we look might affect how we view ourselves. This can easily affect our self-esteem negatively. For these reasons, you should always work on yourself until you are completely comfortable with the way you look.

While the pressure to beautify oneself has been lifted off almost completely, still women who want to resort to surgical solutions to rewind the age clock or to change any features they aren’t comfortable with don’t have to feel insecure about their choices. Visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, discoloration, and dullness have different invasive and non-invasive solutions that have been advised by these aesthetician experts to eradicate any signs of poor health in need of repair. As much as we care about fighting invisible signs of aging by leading a healthy lifestyle or treating any physical problems, we should care about treating the visible signs to feel good about ourselves inside out.

Social Appeal

Just as how the social appeal works in marketing, being attractive in society means that you are automatically socially skilled. Latest social studies have proven that traditional attractiveness increases your appeal among people regardless of gender. People will be more willing to laugh at your jokes or listen to your opinion and ideas if you are beautiful or handsome. This type of stereotyping isn’t judged as badly as it’s more fulfilling and reinforcing. On the other hand, if you aren’t attractive, according to the unattainable standards of beauty in your country, then chances are, people will be less likely to seek you out.

It’s About Health

Beauty doesn’t always revolve around self-esteem and sexual attraction. It’s also about health. Many people are quick to throw judgments when someone doesn’t look healthy in the traditional normal sense. For instance, obese people who have a BMI of 30 or more are underpaid compared to their normal-weight acquaintances. A survey back in 2004 found that obese female coworkers got paid much less at a rate of more than $8000 per year compared to only $4772 for obese men. The same study found that obese women are much more likely to be subjected to discrimination in case of hiring, raises, or their pay.

Self-Love

Beauty nowadays is more about being healthy. If you don’t take care of how you look or the way you present yourself, people will immediately assume that you don’t love yourself enough. For instance, the beauty of our skin isn’t only about being attractive, but rather a reflection of how healthy we are and how well we take care of our skin. People who look sloppy in public are more likely to feel unwelcomed and more judged in the streets. This is why you should pay attention to the way you carry yourself in public.

It Affects Your Pay

Your chances of finding and getting accepted in any position are affected partially by your age, the way you look, and your fashion style. This isn’t the worst part. Many studies that were done in 2004 and 2010 focused on studying the effect of different features on how much people get paid. One study by the University of Florida found that every extra inch in height equates to an extra $789 per year for tall workers. According to this study, if you were 6 inches above normal height, you are likely to get paid more with $5000 than average-height coworkers.

As much as we like to deny how looks matter, different social scientific studies have proven the importance of making snap judgments about different people and their impact on the way our brains function. We tend to size up humans based on their age and how they look regardless of how much we try to not judge a book by its cover. Remember that the way you carry yourself will also affect how people view you and how they treat you, so make sure to always look your best and be yourself unapologetically.
