I support this fight @LilNasX is having with @BET. First, for himself and the other queer artists before him (Meshell Ndegeocello & Rahsaan Patterson come to mind) who’ve had such impact on music but never nominated or invited to perform to my knowledge. Second…

talk to my team about what? industry baby is the 2nd longest running #1 song on the billboard rap charts of all time and didn’t get a single nomination https://t.co/9QR2qk4n0X

Lil Nas has a diamond plaque on the wall (16X plat)and several others. If ya’ll think this is about a BET Award ya silly. He’s sold more records than some people do in 5 lifetimes.

this is my point exactly how can i get acknowledged by the most acclaimed award show in the world and then not even just 1 nomination from my own people? is that not crazy? am i really tripping https://t.co/aE5cCRVsFm

— MONTERO (@LilNasX) June 7, 2022

this not over no bet award this is about the bigger problem of homophobia in the black community, y’all can sit and pretend all u want but imma risk it all for us.

BET Responds

BET has responded to Lil Nas X’s criticism after he was not nominated for any awards this year:

“We love Lil Nas X. He was nominated for a Best New Artist BET Award in 2020, and we proudly showcased his extraordinary talent and creativity on the show twice: he performed ‘Old Town Road’ with Billy Ray Cyrus at ‘BET Awards’ 2019 and his ‘BET Awards’ 2021 performance was a highlight of our show. No one cheered louder that night than BET.

Unfortunately, this year, he was not nominated by BET’s Voting Academy, which is comprised of an esteemed group of nearly 500 entertainment professionals in the fields of music, television, film, digital marketing, sports journalism, public relations, influencers, and creative arts. No one from BET serves as a member of the Voting Academy.

At BET, we are passionate advocates for the wonderful diversity that exists within our community. We are committed to using all of our platforms to provide visibility and inclusion for all of the many intersections of the Black community.”

The Problem With BET’s Statement

It’s interesting that BET stated that they are “committed to using all of our platforms to provide visibility and inclusion for all of the many intersections of the Black community” because it’s not fully true.

BET hasn’t done much to acknowledge Black transwomen or the fact that they are killed by Black cishet men. Imara Jones wrote an article in The Grio about how BET pulled her “stop killing us” commercial that highlighted the epidemic murders of Black trans women by cishet during last year’s BET Award show.

— McDonald’s (@McDonalds) June 29, 2020

Jones mentioned that Pose and American Horror Story actress, Angelica Ross, called BET out for their lack of positive trans representation at the network and the choice to not invite trans actors to its awards.

The article also points out that in 2013 B. Scott, who is a Black, gender non-conforming television personality, was suddenly rushed from the 106th and Park Pre-Show for the BET Awards by BET staff for wearing clothes deemed to be too feminine.

So, Lil Nas X’s response to being snubbed makes sense because BET seems to have a pattern with the types of visibility it gives to Black transwomen and Black queer feminine presenting men.

Do you care that Lil Nas X dissed BET in his new song? Do you think the song is a bop? Do you stand by BET’s response? Comment below.
